SCIBA award nominees are announced

As proof that there is a rich literary life in my sunny, smoky, goofy part of the world, the Southern California Booksellers Association (SCIBA) has announced its 2009 nominees. All books nominated reflect Southern California culture or lifestyle, with authors/illustrators living within the SCIBA region. Books were published between July 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009. Winners will be announced October 24th.

Of special interest are, of course, the nominees for:

Children's Novel
Hunger by Michael Grant
Pendragon Book Ten: Soldiers of Halla by D.J. MacHale
The Year the Swallows Came Early by Kathryn Fitzhugh

Children's Picture Book
Pete & Pickles by Berkeley Breathed
Too Many Toys by David Shannon
Our Library by Eve Bunting

Worthy titles all! (although I must admit that I know nothing about the Pendragon book and wouldn't have guessed that it "reflects Southern California culture or lifestyle" - huh)

  1. And, um, does Hunger really reflect you all's lifestyle? That would be pretty scary.... :)

  2. Heh! Good point... although I have to say I recognize that type of place, if not the situation per se...
